Chennai, Semman cheri - Sathyabama University has taken a sustainable
step towards managing its food waste by implementing a bio gas solution
on its campus. The university hostel, which produces a staggering one
tonne of food waste per day,has partnered with Green Connect to install
one tonne bio gas plant. This Eco friendly initiative not only aids in
waste management but also contributes to cost-saving measures for the
university.
The bio gas plant has proven to be highly efficient,
producing 80 cubic meters of bio gas per day, which is equivalent to 40
kg of LPG.By utilizing the bio gas in their hostel kitchen,Sathyabama
University has significantly reduced its reliance on LPG, resulting
insubstantial cost savings. The implementation of this sustainable
solution aligns with the university commitment to promoting
environmentally friendly practices.
Moreover, the presence of a bio
gas plant on the university campus serves as an added advantage in
fulfilling the criteria for NAAC accreditation. In addition to its
practical benefits, the bio gas plant also serves as a valuable resource
for research purposes within the university. Researchers and students
can utilize the plant to study and explore various aspects of bio gas
production, waste management, and renewable energy.
To initiate the
bio gas production process, a combination of 10 tonnes of cow dung
and1000 liters of water was added. To expedite the kick starting
process, 50 kg of sodium bicarbonate was added daily until the plant
reached optimal functioning. Initially, the first gas formed mostly
consisted of carbon dioxide(CO2), rendering it non-combustible.
Hence, this gas is usually released as part of the process.
To enhance
the monitoring and management of the bio gas plant, Sathyabama
University has integrated a smart bio gas flow meter as an accessory.
This innovative technology allows users to monitor gas pressure and gas
generation remotely through a smart phone application connected to the
internet. The smart flow meter provides real-time data, enabling
efficient and timely decision making regarding gas utilization and
maintenance.
Sathyabama University implementation of the bio gas
solution showcases its commitment to sustainable practices, waste
management, and research advancements. By harnessing the potential of
bio gas, the university not only reduces its environmental footprint but
also contributes to cost savings and academic development.
